World Health Organization – WHO

World Health Organization (WHO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations which is responsible for global public health and its issues. It’s headquarter is situated in Geneva, Switzerland. World Health organization was established on 7th April 1948 which is known as world health day.

It was formed after world war II as an agency under the United Nations that focuses on health issues around the world. It has multiple leadership and priorities that include preventing communicable diseases, providing access to universal health care, and researching the factors that affect human health.

World health organization focuses on developing international health regulations, Increasing access to medical equipment and products, Preventing non-communicable diseases, Researching various factors such as social, economic, and environmental issues which contribute to human health.

It provides technical assistance to the countries around the globe, Sets the international level of health standards and guidelines, And collects data of health issues through the surveys around the world.

The World Health Organization has played a major role in various public health achievements, most notably the destruction of smallpox, the near-eradication of polio, and the achievement of developing the Ebola vaccine.

Its current priorities include communicable diseases, particularly focused on malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and Ebola including non-communicable diseases such as cancer and heart disease. It also Promotes awareness related to nutrition, a healthy diet, food security, occupational health, and substance abuse.

The world health association is responsible for setting goals and priorities, approving the World health organizations budgets, and selecting the Director-General for the World Health Organization. The current Director-General of the World Health Organisation is Tedros Adhanom who is the Foreign Minister and former Health Minister of Ethiopia. He was elected on 1 July 2017 and will continue to serve for the next five years.

The World Health Organization relies on contributions from member states and private donors for fundings. In 2018- 2019, the Unites State contributed about 15% of organizations $5.6 billion budget, the European Union (EU) and its member states have contributed 11% of the World health organization’s $5.6 billion budget, while China contributed 0.2%. The agency WHO is a part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Group.

The World health organization Constitution states that its objective is “the attainment by all people of the highest possible level of health”.

The World Health Organization fulfills this objective through its functions as defined in its Constitution:

  • Act as the directing authority of international health work and coordinating authority
  • Maintain effective collaboration with the governing body, Governmental health administrations, specialized agencies, professional groups, and other organizations
  • Assist Governments in strengthening the health services
  • Provide appropriate technical assistance in emergencies and necessary aid upon the requests.
  • Assist the United Nations trusted territories
  • Stimulate and advance the work to eradicate endemic, epidemic and other diseases.
  • Promote awareness related to health issues
  • Promote the improvement of nutrition, sanitation, recreation, economic or working conditions, and other aspects of environmental hygiene.
  • Providing leadership and assistance on critical health matters.
  • Setting norms and standards for Health and promoting their implementation.
  • Monitoring the health situations around the globe.
  • Monitoring the civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) to get details about births, deaths, weddings, and divorce.

WHO membership

A state becomes a full member of the World Health Organization by agreeing to the treaty known as the Constitution of the World Health Organization. As of 2020, the World Health organization has 194 member states of the United Nations excluding Liechtenstein, The Cook Islands, and Niue.

All United Nations members are eligible for World Health Organization’s membership and according to the World Health Organization’s website, countries other than United Nations members can be admitted as members when their application is approved by the majority vote of the World Health Assembly.

The executive board of WHO is composed of members who are technically qualified in health sectors, and gives effect to the decisions and policies of the World Health Assembly.

Besides, the United Nation’s observer organizations International Committee of the Red Cross. International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies have entered into official relations with WHO and are invited as observers.
